Snorkeling at SeaQuest is a fun and memorable experience at many of our facilities. Guests don’t have to go far to get into tropical waters where they can interact with colorful fish, beautiful stingrays, and even sharks! The depth of the water is approximately 5’ throughout the swimming area, so for the safety of participants, the SeaQuest policy included a swimming requirement of 100 yards.
We recently had a young guest with autism visit SeaQuest to celebrate his birthday with a snorkeling experience. However as he was unable to swim, and as a result of our policy, was turned away. The experience was difficult for the guest and our team, so we took the opportunity to reevaluate our policy. Our national marine and husbandry directors worked with the local teams and made a modification to the policy which allows non-swimmers to participate in the snorkeling experience with a supervising adult who is able to swim. In addition, guests can bring and wear a life jacket.
The experience lasts about 45 minutes, which includes the time for guests to get the wet suits on and off, and about 30 minutes of time in the water. A Marine team member guides the snorkeling experience by sharing instructions, providing food, and fun facts about the ocean animals.
