Shark Week at SeaQuest

Shark Week at SeaQuest

We’re so excited to spend a week celebrating one of our favorite animals … SHARKS! ??

Sharks play an important role in our oceans. They are at the top of the food chain in just about every part of the ocean and help maintain a healthy ecosystem. Unfortunately, we pose a greater risk to their species than they pose for us.

According to WildAid, fins from as many as 73 million sharks are used in shark fin soup each year. Currently more than 70 shark species are at risk of extinction. Conservation organizations are helping educate the consumer to reduce the demand for shark fin trade related products in an effort to maintain the shark population stable, and in turn, the oceans’ ecosystem.

Here are five things you may not know sharks do for you, as described by Conservation International:

  1. Sharks keep the ocean in check. They weed out weak and sick animals, and through their feeding help keep the ecosystem healthy, down to the quantities of algae.
  2. Sharks could hold cures for diseases. Their tissue has anticoagulant and antibacterial properties that could help as treatment for viruses. Replicating these aspects of their tissue already has led to advances in technology to reduce the proliferation of super bugs in hospitals.
  3. Sharks keep the carbon cycle in motion. By feeding on dead matter that collects on the seafloor, deep-sea sharks and other scavengers help move carbon through the ocean.
  4. Sharks have led to smarter design. Their agility and speed in the water has led to advances, like the shark inspired swimsuit, to make swimmers sleeker and less resistant in the water.
  5. Shark tourism is great for local economies. Shark tourism generates hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
